Our Recommendation for Acid Reflux (GERD) 5

Anti-GERD Version 0.0.2

Acid reflux, or GERD, is a common problem. And it is even more common in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). There are medications to help with these issues, and they certainly work for some. One problem is that proton pump inhibitor medication may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures, which is a problem people with PD already suffer from. For this and other reasons, many would like to find natural remedies for GERD that lack these side effects.
Interestingly, for people with PD, these two natural substances we found for GERD also look like they may have a role to play in slowing down the progression of PD. We were interested in them even before we started thinking about solutions to GERD. Another benefit of these substance is that they appear to be protective against the damage that reflux inflicts upon the esophagus, which can sometimes lead to cancer. So we present to you, version 0.0.2 of our anti-reflux recommendation. Here is the list:

Instructions for their use:

Limonene is a very powerful oil extracted from orange peels. Take it once a day, prior to the time you usually experience your primary acid reflux episode. This is often after your biggest meal – which is usually dinner. The product comes in large softgels. They are soft and usually easy to swallow – but you can also prick the gel with a pin and squeeze the oil it out into something else. Mixes with fats or alcohol. But don’t consume the oil directly because it is strong stuff.
Melatonin is a hormone and a powerful antioxidant that diminishes as we age. People also use it to help their sleep cycle, so this may be an added benefit for people with PD who often have problems with sleep. But it is not a sleeping pill and it doesn’t usually make you drowsy. It also appears to be helpful for reflux. Take two small tablets (6 mg total) per day. You may need to experiment with the timing, 1 to 2 hours before bedtime is probably best. When people take it too close to bedtime they sometimes feel groggy the next day.
For both of these substances, you may see the benefit immediately, or it may kick in within about 2 weeks.

Our philosophy is to use combinations and quantities that are most likely to work the first time. This may not seem like the most conservative approach. But in our experience, the benefit of seeing an effect quickly can be very motivating and provide hope. One should not underestimate the value of such an approach in maintaining any health or lifestyle modification. After a beneficial effect has been seen, one can then titrate downward at one's leisure.
