Can Primary Parkinsonism be Stopped by a Blood Pressure drug?

Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, or primary parkinsonism, is PD without a known cause. Researchers have discovered that a mitochondrial enzyme called CYP2D6 may be central to the development of idiopathic PD. This enzyme is inhibited by an alkaloid found naturally in various plants and currently used primarily for the treatment of hypertension.

Keep in mind that this research is preliminary and performed on mice using toxins to simulate Parkinson’s disease. The researchers have no idea if this drug would be effective in humans, and under which conditions, and for which forms of the disease.

For those who really want to know, the substance is called ajmalicine, and marketed worldwide as Card-Lamuran, Circolene, Cristanyl, Duxil, Duxor, Hydroxysarpon, Iskedyl, Isosarpan, Isquebral, Lamuran, Melanex, Raunatin, Saltucin Co, Salvalion, and Sarpan.

It is found naturally in the following plants: devil peppers, rose periwinkle, and kratom.
